The Pied Bull Inn is in Northgate Street in the centre of the city of Chester. Northgate Street is a terrace of shops, offices and on the west side, the public house, which is one of Chester's oldest inns. It was the residence of the Recorder in 1553 and, for the most part, dates from that time.
In 1664 This part of Northgate Street was rebuilt in brick and the frontage over the pavement was added in the 18th century. Some of the adjacent buildings have a set-back ground floor with a covered walkway, are timber-framed in their upper storeys, and are listed buildings, being graded II* or II. The part of the terrace comprising numbers 5–31 is known as Shoemakers' Row, or Sadler's Row.  At the entrance to the street,
The Northgate carries the city walls footpath over Northgate Street - walking the walls is an essential thing to do for every visitor to the city.
